It...kind of reminds me of cats, actually. Cats kept as pets are known to hunt small animals and leave them for their owners to find. It's usually a sign of affection. They want to provide for someone, or they'll bring a half-dead one because that's how they teach their own young to hunt, so they're trying to teach their human how to find food.
